I am trying to avoid including current news events in my blogs because the news changes constantly and quickly becomes outdated. One thing does not change. The news often makes us anxious and tends to be more discouraging than uplifting. It is easy to want to hide away and wait for the Second Coming, but Jesus tells us not to let our hearts be troubled.
Beyond death and taxes, we can count on facing trials and tribulations in life. We experience real joy, but we are not promised an easy or carefree journey. We often grow the most through the challenges we overcome.
Jesus promises a life with no more sorrow or tears, and He tells us that He is the way to reach it. Although He ascended to the Father in Heaven, He did not leave us without direction. He gave us an interior compass that points to Him. This compass is the Holy Spirit, given to us at baptism.
The Holy Spirit guides us toward Jesus, but other forces try to pull us away. The devil and his demons seek the ruin of souls. They spread darkness, fear, and anger, and they tempt us toward spiritual laziness. Many people make excuses for not going to church, but often the real reason is simple. They do not want to invest the effort required to maintain a relationship with Jesus.
The times when my heart has felt most troubled were the times when I drifted farthest from God. Difficult seasons never become easy, but they become more bearable when I stay close to Jesus and keep my priorities in order. When children feel scared or hurt, they run to their parents. We should do the same with our Father. The question is whether we stay close enough to Him to do that.
Take Jesus’ words seriously and do not let your hearts be troubled. He suffered greatly, and if we follow Him, we should expect suffering too. However, if we keep Him close to us, we will have someone to comfort us during the hard times and we will discover that past the pain is eternal joy.
