The Kingdom of Heaven: The Greatest Treasure You’ll Ever Find

I am pretty frugal with money. I like to live a pretty simple life, and I don’t need or want many things. Every now and then, though, something comes along that would make my life a lot easier or better, and I don’t hesitate to buy it. Other times, I’ll gladly invest if I see a great opportunity to make a good return on my money, or I’ll donate generously when I see an opportunity to help others. Jesus tells His disciples that the Kingdom of Heaven is not only the greatest investment we can make, but one worth giving up everything to obtain.

He says the Kingdom of Heaven is like a buried treasure that someone discovers. Upon discovery, the person hides it again, then sells everything he owns to buy the field where the treasure is buried. He buries the treasure to protect what he has found and buys the land to further protect and claim it. He doesn’t spend only part of his wealth. He gladly gives everything because he knows the treasure is worth far more than anything he has.

Jesus also says the Kingdom of Heaven is like a pearl of great price. When a merchant finds it, he sells all he has to buy it. Imagine discovering an antique worth millions of dollars being sold for only $50,000. You would do everything possible to come up with the money, even if it meant selling many of your possessions. The price we pay to enter Heaven is nowhere near its true value. The return on our investment is beyond anything we could ever imagine.

Heaven is the prize, and our investment is our time, talent, and treasure. Do we devote time each day to deepen our relationship with Jesus? Do we use our talents to help ourselves and others grow closer to the unimaginable reward of Heaven? How much of our treasure do we spend on ourselves, and how much do we give to God and those in need?

Not everyone will pay the same price on the journey to Heaven. Some people may live relatively easy and comfortable lives, while others will suffer greatly or even give their lives for Christ. Some can donate vast amounts of wealth, while others may have only a single small coin to offer. Even though we don’t all have the same number of talents and treasures to offer, the main point is that we offer what we have and don’t hold back. 

If Heaven is the greatest treasure we could ever find, why would we make a low offer for it? Jesus paid the price that opened the gates of Heaven, but how much is entering through those gates worth to us? This is not something we should approach halfheartedly. We should want to give God our whole hearts and do whatever it takes to receive the treasure He offers. The return on our investment is not double or triple. It is infinitely greater than anything we could ever give Him.
