The Problem With Evil

Why does God allow evil to exist? Explore the mystery of free will, sin, and God’s plan through the simple beauty of a garden.

I love caring for my lawn and garden and making them beautiful. Even so, I fight a never-ending battle with weeds. No matter what I do, they always come back. They crowd out healthy plants, sometimes choking the life from them. At the very least, they diminish the beauty of the garden.

One of the most common questions people ask is, “Why does God permit evil?” In other words, why does He allow weeds to exist at all? To answer that question, it helps to consider what a weed really is. A weed is simply a plant growing where it does not belong. It is not evil because it exists. It becomes a problem because it grows in the wrong place or works against the gardener’s design. In the same way, the weeds in creation are those who reject God’s will and choose their own way. No one is born as a weed, but they become a weed when their choices interfere with the beautiful plan God desires for His creation.

God had a perfect plan for His garden, but He also gave every person, and even the angels in Heaven, free will. He allows them to choose whether they will follow Him or rebel against Him. God desires genuine love, not forced obedience. Free will is His loving gift that gives each of us the opportunity to choose our own path.

Part of the beauty of Heaven is that God has entrusted each of us with seeds to sow and talents to cultivate. He invites us to create something beautiful and unique that reflects His glory. Each person contributes to the beauty of His kingdom. Every seed God gives is good, but when we plant those seeds outside His will, they become weeds.

I believe the greatest suffering in Hell is regret. When people finally see the truth and the joy they could have known, that realization will be unbearable. They will grieve the opportunities they wasted, the people they hurt, and the beauty they destroyed. They may even resent those who failed to help them find the truth. Every sin will be revealed for the harm it caused to themselves and to others. The weeds will finally see the beauty they ruined and the beauty they could have become if they had only trusted the Gardener.
