When God seems silent and our prayers go unanswered, it can be hard to keep trusting Him. Discover how the Canaanite woman teaches us to have faith, persevere, and trust Jesus even in the silence.
We have all had moments when we reached out to Jesus and begged Him to help us. Yet many times, our pleas seem to fall on deaf ears, and we don’t receive what we ask for. Feeling unheard can be frustrating, but how we respond to that silence can make all the difference.
The Canaanite woman pleaded with Jesus to heal her daughter, but at first, He didn’t say a word to her. When He finally responded, He told her that it was not right to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs. Jesus was testing her faith and giving her an opportunity to show just how strong it was. The Jews sometimes used the term “dogs” as a derogatory reference for Gentiles who stood outside the covenant. However, Jesus used the Greek word kynaria, which refers to little dogs or household pets rather than wild dogs. The woman could have walked away, but instead, she pressed forward. She replied that even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from their master’s table.
Her response revealed a remarkable faith, and Jesus healed her daughter. Her profession of faith reminds me of the centurion’s words: “Lord, I am not worthy for you to enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant shall be saved.” In both cases, these people showed great faith and trust in Jesus and they each had their requests answered.
Silence doesn’t mean Jesus doesn’t care. Sometimes, He may be giving us an opportunity to strengthen our faith or to demonstrate it. No good parent gives a child everything he asks for. Parents often know what is best for their children, even when the children cannot understand why. In the same way, we need to trust our Father in Heaven and follow Him through both good times and bad.
It’s easy to follow someone when everything goes well. But when the storms of life bear down on us, staying the course becomes much harder. That is when faith matters most. We have to choose whether we will continue to trust Jesus or allow discouragement to pull us away from Him.
Are we allowing silence from God to strengthen our faith or weaken it? Even if we remain faithful like the Canaanite woman, God does not guarantee that He will grant every request we make. However, a strong faith in Jesus will ultimately bring us closer to Him.
Jesus may not give us everything we desire in this life, but this life is finite. What He offers us is a joy that is far greater than anything we will experience in this life, and it will last forever. A little faith and trust can go a long way on our journey toward finding true joy.
