I firmly believe in the K.I.S.S. method: Keep It Simple, Stupid. Too many people try to complicate things that don’t need to be complicated. The same holds true in our pursuit of Heaven. Don’t overcomplicate it. Keep it simple.
We all have the same question: “What do we need to do to get to Heaven?” We can look to the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, and the Scriptures for guidance, but two commandments sum up all these teachings: Love God with all your heart, mind, and soul, and love your neighbor as yourself. These two commandments carry a lot of meaning, but their message is simple.
Our ultimate goal is to love God. Many of my blogs emphasize this point. We must continually work on our relationship with God and strive to make it stronger. We cannot do that by ignoring Him or putting worldly things ahead of Him. Strong relationships require effort. We cannot simply coast through life and expect to find ourselves close to Jesus. Building and maintaining good relationships takes work, especially today, when so many of us focus inward. We spend hours glued to our phones and lose opportunities to develop our communication skills. Sometimes, we must step outside our comfort zones to strengthen our relationships.
Our other main focus should be loving our neighbors as ourselves. Just imagine what the world would look like if everyone lived that way. We often look down on those who have less than we do and envy those who have more. Instead, we should lift up those who struggle and learn from those who have more. God loves every one of us and wants even the worst sinner to repent and turn toward the light. We should never declare someone dead to us. Instead, we should never give up on them.
Too many people feel overwhelmed when things get complicated, so they give up. Don’t give up on your faith. Many people have used Dave Ramsey’s “Baby Steps” to get out of debt. His approach works because it breaks a big, overwhelming goal into simple, manageable steps.
We can apply the same principle to our spiritual lives. Keep it simple. Focus on loving God and your neighbor. Take small steps every day to strengthen your relationship with God and show His love to others. By doing so, you can work your way out of spiritual debt and find eternal peace.
