Eternal life Faith Getting to Heaven Heaven Hope Love Saints Spiritual

When the Saints Go Marching In

What does it mean to reach Heaven? Discover how faith, hope, and love guide us through life’s struggles and help us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. One day, may we be among the saints marching into Heaven!

Growing up in Louisiana immersed me in wonderful food, good jazz music, and a rich culture. Louis Armstrong’s jazz version of “When the Saints Go Marching In” remains a classic and one of my favorites. The song not only reminds me of Louisiana but also makes me think about the joy I hope to experience when my earthly life comes to an end.

Most of us don’t look forward to death. Some people beg for death because they endure tremendous pain, but most of us try to put it off for as long as possible. I don’t want to die anytime soon, but I look forward to standing before Jesus and embracing Him. I don’t think any of us can say with 100% certainty that we are going to Heaven. However, the virtues of faith, hope, and love help ease our doubts.

We need faith in God and His great mercy. We all sin, but God always waits for us to run back to Him. Don’t become discouraged by repeated sins. Instead, make a deliberate effort to ask for forgiveness every time you fall. God doesn’t expect perfection. He wants us to keep turning to Him. Never lose hope and never give up.

It’s very easy to lose hope in a world filled with chaos, war, violence, and pain. It’s also difficult to maintain hope when we keep falling into the same sins over and over. We aren’t guaranteed a life free from pain and trouble, but when we keep hope alive in our hearts, we stay on the path to Heaven. People who live with hope don’t give up. They keep pushing through pain and difficulties. Although hope keeps us moving forward, we also need love to keep the fire burning within us.

We’ve all heard how unimaginably wonderful Heaven is, but why do we want to go there? It’s not enough to desire Heaven simply because we will be happy. We should want to go there because we love God and want to spend eternity with Him. Try to make Heaven less about what we hope to receive and more about being with the One we truly love.

Our primary goal in life should be to become saints. We may never receive recognition as saints of the Catholic Church, but if we make it to Heaven, we will have accomplished our mission. Lord, I want to be in that number when the saints go marching in!
