A Spring of Water Welling Up to Eternal Life

We all seek to have purpose in life. Some of my worst days are those spent doing nothing and my best are those where I am productive and am able to accomplish something. Why are we here? What is the meaning of life? We all have a thirst within us for something more, but what we do to quench that thirst will impact our long term happiness.

There have been times when I have felt hungry, but when I ate I wasn’t satisfied. I often realized that I wasn’t hungry, but actually thirsty. Sometimes, I realized that the food that I was eating wasn’t what my body wanted or needed. So often we try to quench the thirst within us with things that only temporarily hold off the thirst or don’t do anything to quench it.

We all have different things that we turn to in order to satisfy ourselves. Some of us turn to social media, the internet, or video games. Others turn to workout classes and exercise. Shopping and the consumption of goods is another popular activity. All of those can be good things to do in moderation, but none of them will satisfy us completely. The activity will eventually become old, tiresome, or not interesting enough anymore and we will need to find another way to satisfy our thirst. People who become addicted to things will find that they need more and more of that thing over time to continue to satisfy their needs.

All of the machines that we have created require some sort of fuel or energy to run. This fuel needs to be replaced once it is depleted or the machine will stop running. People have been searching for a self sustaining perpetual motion machine for a long time, but have yet to find one. If only we could also find a way to be perpetually satisfied.

There is a way to achieve perpetual satisfaction, but it requires having a good relationship with God. Our Father provides us the energy to not only exist, but to keep going. Without God, we would eventually die and that would be the end of us. God created us in the beginning and so He also has the ability to recreate us after our death. He will give our exalted bodies the ability to do so many amazing things including the ability to withstand suffering and death. If we want this power, we need to stay plugged into God. When we commit mortal sin, we cut ourselves off from His power and love. Then, when we go to the sacrament of reconciliation, the priest reconnects us to God.

The love of God is never ending. When we put our faith in God and turn to Him, He will fill the void in our life. As Jesus says, “Everyone who drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” In our search of satisfaction, let us turn to God instead of earthly things and we will never thirst.
