Whoever Finds His Life Will Lose It

We are taught at a young age that we need to study if we want to do well in school and be successful. We are also taught that money equals success and the better job we get, the more successful we will be. A successful life is also said to be achieved if we stay healthy and live a long life. There are many people who think they have figured out the key to success, but they may be on the path to failure.

Isn’t it often the case that when we think that we have everything figured out, life smacks us in the face? Everything is going great and then we lose our job, our car breaks down, or someone has a health issue. Initially, we may wonder why we are so unlucky, but the bad things that happen to us can often help get us back on the right path.

When we get too comfortable in life, we have a tendency to get complacent and our relationship with God takes a hit. We don’t need as much help, so we don’t turn to Him in need. I know that I tend to pray more often and harder during tough times. We should never get the feeling that we don’t need God. Everything we have is because of God and without Him we would be nothing. All we have to do is look at the grandness of the universe to see how small we are. It’s laughable when people think that the world revolves around them and they lift themselves up as being important. We just saw two billionaires killed in the recent submersible incident near the Titanic. Despite their great wealth and power, they weren’t able to save their own lives. I’m not a saying that they were bad people or deserving of what happened, but I’m saying that money, power, and prestige can’t always save us.

“Whoever finds his life will lose it.” Inevitably, we will all die. No amount of money will allow us to live forever. However, physical death isn’t what Jesus is talking about, but spiritual death. Jesus also says,“Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” When we sacrifice our own wants and put God and others first, we will be repaid with eternal life. I think that we would all like to achieve eternal happiness. We will have no problem achieving that goal if our definition of success involves getting to Heaven.
