Truth, Justice, and the American Way?

Superman was always my favorite superhero. I loved how he was always trustworthy, noble, and good. When he dealt with the bad guys, he only neutralized the threat instead of paying back evil with evil. Superman would try to minimize casualties and even saved the lives of those he was trying to stop. Truth, justice, and the American way was his slogan.

Pilate once asked Jesus, “What is truth?” The correct question should be, “Who is truth?” Jesus gives us the answer when He says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” Jesus shows us the path to take in order to succeed. The world is full of deceit and it can often be hard to discover the truth. Abortion is wrong in every way, but just look at how the world spins the issue of abortion. The world distorts the truth in order to allow abortion to happen and so the world also needs super men and women who can shine their light to show the truth.

When a wrong is done or someone treats us or our loved ones harshly or unfairly, there is a feeling that justice needs to be served. It is very tempting to lash out at those who attack us and seek to repay them in kind. It feels good and is easy to repay violence with violence, foul language with foul language, and hate with hate. It can be extremely hard to stay calm when others attack us, but the ability to stay calm and not retaliate shows true strength. Jesus was confronted and attacked multiple times, but He didn’t respond to His critics with violence. We need to show our inner super strength and not let the actions of others cause us to lose our way.

The American way is usually referring to the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. However, those principles are lacking today. I already talked about how lives are being taken through abortion. They are also being taken through euthanasia and through much injustice throughout many countries in the world. There are many places in the world where the people don’t have any liberty. The government of some countries doesn’t care if their people are starving, poor, or lacking in basic freedoms. They only care if they gain power and wealth for the top 1% of their citizens. China and North Korea are two countries that seem so worried about threats to their sovereignty and way of life that they go through great lengths to suppress freedoms and the happiness of their own citizens. In actuality, there is no threat to their sovereignty. If countries were just happy with what they currently have and all lived in peace and unity, just think of what the world would look like and what we could accomplish together. We are all brothers and sisters and we should start acting like it.

It doesn’t take Superman to make the world a better place. One of my favorite lines from the original Superman movie came from Superman’s father Jorel. He says, “They can be a great people, Kal-El; they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you my only son.” Our Father also sent His only Son to light our way. Soak up the rays from the light of Christ and we will all be super.
