The Bread of Life

Bread is my favorite food, so I think I will enjoy writing this blog. My grandmother used to make homemade bread as part of Sunday lunch. I still remember the wonderful smells from her kitchen, especially the smell of her homemade bread. Life wouldn’t be the same if I couldn’t eat bread on at least a semi regular basis.

Life would also not be the same without being able to consume the bread of life on at least a weekly basis. I’m curious how everyone did with not being able to go to church in person during the COVID-19 shutdown of 2020. I think we could all agree that watching church on the internet isn’t the same as going in person. Catholics had it worse than Protestants during the shutdown because we were not only missing the church service, but we were also missing out on receiving the body and blood of Jesus. Watching the Mass on TV is like watching a cooking show where a wonderful meal is made, but we can’t eat it.

Jesus tells us, “Whoever comes to me shall not hunger.” Our souls grow hungry just as our bodies do. We crave Jesus and there is no greater way to receive Him than in person in the form of the Eucharist.

Jesus is the true bread of life. When we let His light shine through us, we are like my grandmother making the wonderful smells in the kitchen. Those smells will make others wonder what’s cooking and they will grow hungry for the true bread. If we start to make the world hunger for Jesus, just imagine what the world might cook up.
