The Beauty of Saying Yes to God

Jesus healed many people during His ministry on Earth and He often asked the people that He healed to not tell anyone. However, in just about every case, the healed person couldn’t keep the secret and before long everyone knew about the healing. While Jesus wanted the word spread about Him, He wanted to better control the spread of information. If too many people heard about Him healing people in a certain area, He wouldn’t be able to continue to do more good works in the area without getting overwhelmed by the crowds of people. Many times we have good intentions, but end up doing things that get in the way of Jesus and other people’s path to Him.

We should all want to bring others closer to Jesus, but we sometimes do things that go against God’s plan for us and distract others from their journey to Heaven. Jesus has a hard enough time trying to change hearts and we should try to help make His job easier. The world in general encourages people to do whatever they want to do, but that often conflicts with what’s the right thing to do. How many times do we go against something God asks us to do in order to do what we want to do instead?

The things we say and do all have an influence on others. If someone were to ask a friend to go eat at Hooters, they would be giving their friend the impression that it’s ok to objectify women. If someone talks about all the free music that they downloaded online, they would be saying that stealing is fine. Making jokes about things that are holy makes it seem that those holy things aren’t so special.

The positive things we do also make a difference. When people attend Mass, they are showing that worshiping God is important. When people not only go to Mass, but are engaged and excited about going, they convey an even greater positive message to others. Generosity, kindness, patience, and basically all virtues are very contagious.

It’s easy to give in to our passions instead of doing the sometimes hard things that God is calling us to do. There are so many excuses we come up with to explain why we can’t do what God wants us to do. Life isn’t easy and if it ever starts getting too easy, we need to take a step back and make sure we are on the right path. Jesus is asking for our help. Let’s work on saying no to always doing things our way and show the world the beauty of saying yes to God.
