My Way or the Highway

We all have goals and aspirations for our life and we spend lots of time trying to achieve them. This is especially the case for those living in free countries like the U.S. where people are afforded much freedom to do what they want. Even God gives all of us the free will to choose good or bad. While freedom to choose is a great thing to have, there are always consequences for the decisions we make.

I hate hearing about another mass shooting, especially one involving young kids. Many people struggle with the question of why God allows this to happen to innocent people. If God truly loves us, why doesn’t He stop this from happening? The answer is that He can’t give us all free will without allowing us to also choose evil. God gives us the ability to choose the greatest good and the worst evil. If He stopped evil from happening, He would be taking away the free will of the person wanting to commit the evil. Love can’t exist if we don’t have the ability to freely choose it.

God allows people to choose evil, but societies must enact laws that forbid certain behaviors in order to allow society to not only exist, but also thrive. Laws exist to protect the freedoms of everyone in society. Just imagine what anarchy we would be in if crimes like theft, murder, and rape were allowed.

What about when someone decides that they want to change their sex? When someone tries to change something that is unchangeable, bad things happen. My son loves dinosaurs so much that he wants to create one by combining the DNA of a lizard and a chicken. I’m not sure what that creature would be, but it wouldn’t be a dinosaur. When we fight God and His plan for us, we end up walking away from Him. The decisions we make also have consequences that can affect the freedom of other people. Is it fair to allow a man to compete in women’s sports when they would have an unfair advantage? One woman may have spent her whole life training to be the top women’s runner only to have her record time beaten by a man. Is it fair to allow a man professing to be a woman into the girls locker room? People are having all kinds of surgeries to make themselves fit an ideal image that they have in their mind when God created us all in His image. When we say we don’t like who we are, we are kind of saying we don’t like how God created us. There may be feminine men who are attracted to men and masculine women who are attracted to women. However, we sometimes need to put our physical desires aside in order to walk the path to eternal happiness. Sexual relationships aren’t something that we are owed in life and we aren’t all called to have one.

Why are we here and why did God create us? Did God create us so that we can all live happy lives the way that we want? Many people treat this life as the only life we will live and don’t think about the next. God created us because He loves us and wants to share His love with us for all eternity. Why didn’t He just send us straight to Heaven? Think of this life as the courting couples do before marriage. We should use this time to get to know God and discern if we want to spend eternity with Him. Do we live our life like a single person who is primarily concerned about himself or do we live like an engaged couple who thinks about the needs of the other as well? We all have a light and we shouldn’t hide it or only use it for ourselves, but let it shine to others as well. We are a diverse people and diversity is a good thing when we choose to work together. When we freely choose to stand with our neighbor and think of the big picture instead of going in our own direction, we will create the most beautiful rainbow of light.
