Catholic Church Division Faith Father Follow God Meaning of Life Rock Saints Spiritual

Upon this Rock

I often talk about being a light to others. When our souls burn brightly, we help point the way to Heaven. But when Jesus established His Church, He needed more than a light—He needed a rock.

Anyone building something knows the importance of a solid foundation. If the base shifts or crumbles, the entire structure risks collapse. Jesus, knowing His time on Earth was limited, chose a leader with strong faith who could carry on His mission. That leader was Peter, the first pope of the Catholic Church.

Many Christians believe the Church isn’t necessary and that we can follow Jesus with just Scripture alone. But doing that removes the foundation and expects the structure to stand on its own. Every family passes down stories and traditions through generations. To truly understand the big picture, we need both Scripture and tradition. Words can lose meaning over time, but traditions help preserve their true message.

It’s reassuring to have a Church that doesn’t shift with public opinion. There is only one truth, and it doesn’t change. Just because the majority believes something doesn’t make it true. Even during times when the Church had flawed leaders or corrupt popes, its core teachings remained unchanged. Church leaders are human and imperfect, but we believe the Holy Spirit protects the Church from falling into error.

We’re called to be rocks too. If we don’t stand firm in our faith, we can’t lead others to the truth. If I don’t stay grounded in what I believe, what message does that send to my kids? Just as no building can stand without a solid base, we need a firm foundation to build our lives and legacies. If we have a strong enough faith to keep God as our foundation, we’ll still have Him even if everything else falls apart.
