Advent Depression Faith Follow God Getting to Heaven Meaning of Life rejoicing Spiritual Trinity

Joy

Discover the difference between happiness and true Christian joy. Learn why joy lasts longer, goes deeper, and is a Fruit of the Holy Spirit that carries us through even the hardest seasons—especially during Advent.

When we talk about happiness and joy, it’s easy to confuse the two. Happiness is a temporary emotion, while joy is something much deeper and longer lasting. Happiness comes from external circumstances, but joy is a steady, inner contentment that comes from within. I’m happy to have a great job, but I’m joyful because I’ve found true meaning in my life through following Jesus.

Joy is the second fruit of the Holy Spirit, a sign that the Spirit is present and active in our lives. A person rooted in joy carries a sense of purpose and peace. They stand on a firm foundation, even when life becomes difficult.

So many people today struggle with depression. Much of this heartbreak comes from building life on things that can’t last. People often chase happiness from achievements, possessions, or even other people, but when those things fade or when loss inevitably comes, they feel empty again. It’s natural to grieve when we lose someone or something precious, but the loss shouldn’t destroy our foundation. When our relationship with the Trinity is at the center of our lives, even the hardest moments don’t shake us in the same way.

As we enter the third week of Advent, take time to reflect on joy. Who or what brings you deep peace, inspiration, and joy? If Jesus isn’t your foundation, then what is? If we cling only to temporary happiness, disappointment is inevitable. But when we seek the lasting joy that comes from God, we find a peace that nothing in this world can take away.
